USEFUL QUESTIONS
Once you feel happy with your choice of surgeon, seek satisfactory answers to all your questions, including:
- Where will the surgery be performed? At the clinic, in a private hospital or day-stay facility?
- How long will you be in hospital, if the procedure involves hospitalisation?
- Will it be done under general or local anaesthetic?
- Will a qualified anaesthetist administer the anaesthetic or any sedative drugs?
- What are the side-effects from the surgical procedure or any of the drugs which are likely to be used?
- How long does the operation take?
- How long should you prepare to take off work to recuperate? What activities should be restricted during this phase?
- How much pain should you expect, if any? What sort of pain relief is provided or necessary after surgery?
- Is much bleeding, bruising and swelling expected?
- Will the scars fade? How long does it take? What steps can be taken to minimise scarring?
- What are the possible or likely complications?
- Is post-operative care included in the costs?
- Is there any likelihood of additional surgery being required? Will this incur extra cost?
