USEFUL QUESTIONS

Once you feel happy with your choice of surgeon, seek satisfactory answers to all your questions, including:

  1. Where will the surgery be performed? At the clinic, in a private hospital or day-stay facility?
  2. How long will you be in hospital, if the procedure involves hospitalisation?
  3. Will it be done under general or local anaesthetic?
  4. Will a qualified anaesthetist administer the anaesthetic or any sedative drugs?
  5. What are the side-effects from the surgical procedure or any of the drugs which are likely to be used?
  6. How long does the operation take?
  7. How long should you prepare to take off work to recuperate? What activities should be restricted during this phase?
  8. How much pain should you expect, if any? What sort of pain relief is provided or necessary after surgery?
  9. Is much bleeding, bruising and swelling expected?
  10. Will the scars fade? How long does it take? What steps can be taken to minimise scarring?
  11. What are the possible or likely complications?
  12. Is post-operative care included in the costs?
  13. Is there any likelihood of additional surgery being required? Will this incur extra cost?
